¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ awarded $163,675 EmpowerVetEd grant to support veterans and military spouses in education
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (DEW) has awarded ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ $163,675 through the EmpowerVetEd grant initiative for the project titled Empower VetEd: Supporting Military in ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ Educator Preparation ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ. Led by Sherrill Sellers, Ph.D. as Lead Principal Investigator, with Amity Noltemeyer, Ph.D. and Brian Schultz, Ph.D. as Principal Investigators, the project aims to increase enrollment of military-affiliated ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs in education majors, growing from a baseline of seven in Fall 2024 to 15 by Academic Year 2027.
The EmpowerVetEd project provides scholarships, transportation reimbursements, and coordinated academic and social support, including a structured mentor program and career coaching, to incentivize and retain military ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs in education majors. The grant, managed through the Comprehensive Continuous Improvement Plan (CCIP) system, highlights Miami’s commitment to empowering service members to become educators and supports workforce readiness.
Special recognition goes to Amy Lamborg, whose assistance in proposal development was instrumental to the project’s success. The grant period runs from December 1, 2024, through September 30, 2027.
