Down to the Penny: Maureen Cunningham Retires
Maureen Cunningham, a highly respected and dedicated accounting professional, retired from Scripps Gerontology Center in 2024. Known for her strong work ethic, Maureen has been a pivotal figure in supporting financial operations and events that welcomed faculty, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs, and staff into the research community for the past seven years.
In 1878, E. W. Scripps founded The Penny Press, which grew into the Cleveland Press and continued its growth through radio, TV, and digital platforms. Maureen had worked at The E. W. Scripps Company for nearly four decades. In 2017, she was looking for a new opportunity, and she saw a familiar name listed on a job at ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ—Scripps.
An effective and patient communicator, Maureen was instrumental in keeping excellent records to make grants and contracts invoicing more efficient. She was responsible for keeping the Center’s financial records up to date once a grant was awarded, and she took care of all P-card transactions, including finding other funding sources to cover expenses when a particular grant would not.
"I was impressed with Maureen at her initial interview and continued to be impressed throughout her time at Scripps,” said Cheryl Johnson, Director of Finance and Operations at Scripps Gerontology Center. “Her accounting knowledge and commitment to excellence in accounting best practices was AMAZING. I learned a lot from her. She kept me sane when unknown charges would pop up on our grants – she would always track it down to the penny!"
When faced with a problem, there was nothing more reassuring than Maureen saying she’d “take care of it.” Throughout her career, she has consistently demonstrated dependability, attention to detail, and a collaborative spirit as she worked to make Scripps a successful research center and a successful work environment for faculty, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs, and staff.
As she steps into retirement, Maureen leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, innovation, and dedication. Her colleagues at Scripps Gerontology Center celebrate her many achievements and thank her for her years of service.
